THE NIGHTJAR SINGS

SolarJar by Consol, R120 at Design Indaba Expo

Behold, the solar powered lamplet, by Consol.

This ingenious idea was a finalist in the Most Beautiful Object contest at Design Indaba. People were standing in a long snaky line to snap them up this afternoon. I got one for myself. My sister got. My friend Lex got several. I can’t wait for the next power outage. And I love my sister’s idea of putting pretty coloured things like rose petals inside.

How it works: Leave in the sun for about 3 hours. After dark, you’ll get about 6 hours of light. Cost: R120.
