OLD SCHOOL, NEW SCHOOL

Book cover by Jesse, 13

When I was at school, all books had to be covered. Had to. Or bloody else.

This involved a sheet of brown paper, a blue and white jam jar label and plastic on the outside. Maybe a cut-out picture of something creative (no rock stars please), if you were into self-expression. Not covering your books that way, and on time, resulted in 2 hours of detention on a Friday afternoon and / or a pop-in at the headmistress’s office for a tongue lashing.

Things aren’t what they used to be. They’ve got a lot better. The 13-year-old who did this to his book didn’t get detention for not using brown paper. He got a high five from his teacher. School now, compared to back in the day, can be supremely cool and fun.

I just got there a couple of decades too soon.
